Tiesto never saw it coming.
I guess no one saw this coming. Dance music was a minor when it came out. Underground, unrecognizable. It was no popular music. In the 90s, people would gather secretly, from authorities and parents, to enjoy non-stop dance music until the break of dawn. The ravers, what they are called, were considered an abomination to society as it is linked to drugs and free sex.
Fast forward years later, French DJ by the name of David Guetta made dance music very pop and very easy. It made hits and created a path for dance music to rise and claim the mainstream throne. No one would expect, a DJ would be killing the charts. TOP 40 charts to be exact. It became common for names like Alesso, Zedd, Major Lazer to come on board and became millionaires with their music.
Now, Indonesia is taking part of this scene too. Osvaldo Nugroho is a Jakarta based DJ which took on the club scene in a thunderstorm. Making it’s way through clubs, dance scenes with confidence that his music will strive. He produces and worked with pop singers and created songs that eventually didn’t quite make it. 2015 is the time.
I could say that he is 2 years late in releasing this pop, easy listening and very simple themed song, Hanya Untukmu. Joining forces with Anji, a soloist that used to be the vocalist of an indo pop band called DRIVE, Hanya Untukmu is a song that any radio music director will be excited to play. This song, offers nothing but easy lyrics, themes and one hell of a catchy tune.
On its release, Hanya Untukmu made it to the charts in second cities across Indonesia, which is a damn good sign that, Indonesian dance pop genre, is accepted. Now, the hardest part is, after it reaches radio airplays, will it be able to be a local anthem played by club DJ’s?
When asked, Osvaldo just said, “I can only hope and try”
